Why Do Good People Do bad things?
There are many causes into why good people do bad things. Sometimes there surroundings are negative and when there used to too much negative; will then they become or start doing bad things as well. It all depends with who they start hanging out with. Good people might start doing bad things for all the stress they keep in. By having stress you might stop eating and sleeping, and then you start have negative thoughts as well. Three studies will be mention into why this happens.
To begin with, the first example there is for why good people do bad things, is the Stanford Prison Study. There young college students were either get the role as a prisoner or the guard. Craig Haney and Philip Zimbardo wanted to know what will happen to ordinary college students that will receive the role of either the prisoner or the guard. This indeed was an interesting experiment for these two men. The first day that they did the experiment the, “prisoners,” weren’t really corruperating. They would think of this as a whole joke. Just kind of playing along as if it was a whole game to them. Their little acting soon became the real thing. Thats when Craig and Philip told the guards that they had to step up to the game and start acting tougher with their prisoners. The guards were prohibited to hurt the prisoners. They couldn’t hurt them in any violent way. Once the guards found a way to break them mentally; will thats when things in the prison started to get weirder and weirder. Eventually the guards started to bully them by saying harsh things. Thats when the prisoners started to become mental; wanting to desperately leave the prison.
Another example, is the Obedience Study, this is where people will be tested to give out questions and if the other person gets it wrong that person who gaved out the question will be shocked. The confusing this is that the person who answers the question isn’t really a person. Just a manikin that program to say some of the answers wrong or right. Later this manikin will start shouting that the electric shocks hurt, and to stop the whole experiment. Thats when the person who gives out the question has to repeat saying that the experiment has to go on. When the person who gives out the question goes on with the experiment thats when you really know if they really do care of the person who is receiving the electric shocks.
The word attribution theory, "the explanations we make of our behavior and the behavior of others generally fall into two categories," (Pg. 324 Invitation to Psychology). Can really explain why they do it. For an example it can mean a person is under pressure. Another study that was mention in class was Class Divided, where a teacher did a study on her third grade students to see how they would react to be judge. It started with the blue eyes were superior than the brown eye students. The brown eye student had to wear a collar so everyone else can distinguish them from the blue eyes. When it came time for recess the brown eye students couldn’t play with the blue eye kids or play on the playground. This made the the brown eye children very sad and they even did poorly on their test scores. The teacher even said how brown eye students were very lazy and other negative words. That made the brown eye children feel even worse than they were. Then the next day the it switched by having the blue eye students wear the collar and the Brown eye students were the superior. The same results with brown eye students happen the same to the blue eye students.
Eventually, many good people might do bad things. Sometimes this happens, because their over stressed out or there is someone that is pushing them to do bad things. Like brainwash them, for an example what Hitler did to Germany. The three studies shows how ordinary people can all of a sudden go from good to bad. At the end think about this; if good people can turn to good. Will, it’s the same for bad people. They too can turn from bad to good.
